Gene C Antill Jr.
For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in, naked, and you clothed Me…Well done good and faithful servant. (Mt. 25: 35-36, 21).
Gene C Antill Jr. passed gently into the hands of God on Thursday, February 2. Born in Houston November 1, 1935, he was preceded in death by his father, Eugene C. Antill, mother, Irma S. Antill, and sister, Elaine Morelock. A graduate of Lamar H.S. in 1954, he was a trainer at Lamar for all sports, including the 1953 State Champion football team. Gene attended Rice University on a full scholarship, working as an all sports athletic student trainer and manager.
Gene's professional career included VP & Gen. Mgr. at Rodney's Men's Clothing stores. In 1971 he began his 39 years in teaching and mentoring future professionals (as a Distributive Education, marketing, and business educator). He taught 14 years at both Kashmere H.S. and the University of Houston and then 25 years at the Contemporary Learning Center (CLC). He was a graduate of Leadership Houston in 1985. Gene fulfilled his many entrepreneurial dreams by creating and starting many businesses. He was truly gifted in his ability to create connections and identify opportunities.
Throughout his life Gene's true passion was meeting and helping those in need. He was on the Vestry at the Church of Redeemer and Trinity Episcopal Church. He founded or co-founded several charitable organizations - Houston Habitat for Humanity, SEARCH (also a board member) and, along with Rev. Garrett Wingfield, the Lord of the Streets Mission. He also served as Trustee of University of the South for five years.
Gene enjoyed reading, storytelling, fishing, swimming and playing tennis (an active member of the O.F.T.A.). He continued all of these hobbies up until last year.
Above all, Gene was a man of God who loved his family deeply. He will be missed by his beloved wife Carol; his six children, Donal, Mark, Kevin, Micah, Jenny and Julie; his daughters-in-law, Tricia, Katy and Jennifer; his grand- children Mary Grace, Matthew, George, Vaughn and Nolan; sister-in-law Peggy Green; and his pug Trooper.
